Large works completed: thimble #3, firefighters on parade

It was a while coming but the completion of the following two paintings finally arrived. Both the thimble and the volunteer firefighters were compelling subjects to paint.

The thimble is still one of my favorite subjects to paint. I have done two smaller paintings of this thimble prior to this. It is a simple little object that can hold so much memory or meaning for people. To some it's just a primitive-like tool that poor people use for repairing something. For others it can symbolize a return to things that are simple yet work. Right now for me it is a large symbol of our very recent time. Currently we are making a collective re-evaluation of our social situation, our economy, our relationships with people as well as things, our values, etc. That's why I've titled it The Great Re-evaluation.

The firefighters appeared to be enjoying being an entry in the parade that day as they always appear to be. Their synchronized movements, their wide, genuine grins and the interaction with the parade watchers spoke of the connectivity and commitment between volunteers and the community. It also speaks of how the community, especially small communities where firefighting is a volunteer job, celebrate it's heroes.
